Did you know that 75-90% of the immune system is governed by the gut microbiome? New research has found that when we feed the good bacteria in our intestines AND do the same for our dogs and cats, wonders occur! But is there something beyond probiotics we can do?
Our digestive systems and those of our companions are unique for each of us and have their own "intelligence." For decades now I have encouraged dog and cat parents to use yogurt, kefir, digestive enzymes and probiotics to help restore and maintain healthy gut flora in their companions. But guess what? We can do some more whole food healing of the digestive tract as well!
Fermented Veggies to the Rescue!
Oral probiotics are great, but how do you know you're feeding the best bacteria for your companion's tummy?
Fermented veggies are more potent, less expensive than powdered probiotics, providing a whole food without any processing with the inevitable loss of effectiveness. They help detox heavy metals, pathogenic bacteria, balance the blood, provide vitamins C, K, B, enzymes and lactic acid which helps fight cancer. Diarrhea, due to food reactivity, stress, over or frequent use of antibiotics, steroids, too many carbs, chronic inflammation, immune issues can all respond to fermented veggies!
Should I feed my companion Sauerkraut?
Sauerkraut, kimchi and other fermented vegetables can efficiently rebuild and strengthen the gut microbiome, BUT many of these prepared fermented veggies are too spicy or too pungent for dogs and especially cats.
Solution? Make your own!
It's really very easy and the beauty of it is that you can choose the milder veggies earlier in the fermentation process to allow your companion to get used to the sourness bit by bit. NOTE: Always use organic veggies when possible as you don't want to ferment any chemicals along with the veggies! (See link below for instructions)
